Print and Electronic Resources

Reference Materials
·      I think the term reference material is more than the “reference “ section in the library. Reference material is all over the net and students need to be taught how to find reliable internet references.

Wikipedia
·      As a definitive source of information I don’t think it is always reliable and would not use it as a reference for an assignment but is good as a starting point.

Dictionaries
·      Primary students still need dictionaries, especially lower primary (like the Oxford Dictionary) as they are still developing the skills to learn what is a reliable source and what is not. Secondary students would be fine using online dictionaries

Summary
·      I think the difficulty of online reference material is the reliability or information and also the bombardment of information. I felt that many of the atlas sites I found was full of information and ads and that it was hard to focus on what I wanted.

Website useful for TL’s http://www.sldirectory.com/

p. 12. “The web can be used as a resource which provides students with mediated sites, which have been vetted by the teacher…The value of this type of mediation is that sites are selected for particular local purposes and to suit the learning needs of particular groups of students.” For this to be successful the teacher needs to be an effective searcher themselves.

p. 13. Inquiry based teaching is the key to successful education.

•      Knowledge - remembering or recognising something previously encountered without necessarily understanding, using, or changing it.
•      Comprehension - understanding the material being communicated without necessarily relating it to anything else.
•      Application - using general concept to solve a particular problem.
•      Analysis - breaking something down into parts.
•      Synthesis - creating something new by combining different ideas.
•       Evaluation - judging the value of materials or methods as they might be applied in a particular situation

Pardoe, D. (2009). Towards successful learning: Introducing a model for supporting and guiding successful learning and teaching in schools. 2nd ed., London: Continuum International.(Ebook in CSU Library).
p. 49. Pollard and Tann in above say: “Learning can be considered as the processes which skills, attitudes, knowledge and concepts are acquired and understood, applied and used, or advanced and extended.it should not be confused with a mere completion of tasks.”

Contents page:
1. Learning
 2. Behaviourism and the beginnings of theory
3. Cognitive, constructivist learning -- 4. Multiple intelligences
5. Learning styles
6. Difficulties with learning
7. Brain-based learning and other new understanding
 8. Relating theory to practice: what can we learn from research? Appendix. Comparing and contrasting Piaget and Vygotsky: in summary

Forum posting:
Activity 1:
I must admit when I saw the names of Bloom, Piaget and Vygotsky, I remember how much I disliked learning about them 15 years ago. I am pleased that now that I have some teaching experience I understand them more and how the deeper order thinking skills are essential for student learning.
On a side note, I like the change of name from synthesis and evaluation (http://gaeacoop.org/dalton/publications/new_bloom.pdf p. 2) to evaluate and create, as it is more user friendly. I also found it interesting that they have changed the order and placed create last. I guess being able to create something shows a greater understanding of the learning objective.
Activity 2:
Sources of Information
·      Interactive website for use on the whiteboard about what makes a rainforest and looks at the key elements required for a rainforest to be classed as rainforest
·      Map showing where in the world rainforests grow (poster or website or both would assist students to understand what rainforests need to grow)
·      Website (preferably interactive) describing and showing pictures of the different types of trees and animals that live and grow in the rainforest and how they are integral to each other and the rainforest ecosystem.

Here we go again

After having a lovely month off study this week has seen the beginning of the next semester. Unfortunately for me I have received an AA for the last subject (to be completely honest I wasn't that surprised, my final assignment was not good). I receive the additional assessment yesterday and have no idea where to start with it. I keep reading and rereading it am hoping that I gain some understanding of it soon!
On a more positive note, this semesters subject, Information Environment, looks interesting and very practical. Although the assessments look difficult I can see the importance of them in the Library and how they can help students learning.
My aim for this semester is to pass the Additional Assessment and then gain a pass for this current subject. I also aim to blog more regularly!

Interesting Read

One book that was very interesting and worth reading again that I discovered during this subject was
Boyd, S. (2006). The Connected Library.
This book us full of useful and simple suggestions to improve your library. Here are a few:
p. 11. Do a SWOT (Strength, Weakness, Opportunities and Threats) analysis each year.
p. 13. The author reiterate the importance of communication with staff… such a vital skill that is often neglected!
p. 18. “The library empowers students to be independent learners by ensuring they are effective users of ideas and information.” What a profound and true statement.

ETL 504 Reflections

I have just (well 5 days ago!) handed in my second assignment for this subject. Although I found aspects of this subject more interesting than I anticipated I am very pleased it is over. After just scrapping a pass on the first assignment I am hoping for the same with this assignment. I found it very hard to write a vision statement for a hypothetical setting.  I used the previous school I worked in as a basis but still found it unreal and very hard to motive myself to write the assignment.  I also found it incredibly difficuly to find appropriate references for this assignment and to write it in third person.

I am even more certain that before that the purpose of a library and all (well most I hope) teachers is to educate their students to help them reach their potential. One quote that I did find useful was from the ACARA website (http://www.australiancurriculum.edu.au/GeneralCapabilities/General%20capabilities.pdf) that "all students should become successful learners, confident and creative individuals and active and informed citizens." I think that as long as we have the best interests our students in mind we are on the right track!

Here’s to a pass for the assignment and therefore the subject …. I really don’t want to do it again! Next subject I need to blog more:)
